PM LGBTQ: Gay
and Lesbian Book Club Sylvan Way Library 5:30 PM LGBTQ Lesbian and Gay Book Group Topic for June 28th: "Tipping the Velvet" by Sarah Waters. "This lush tale fearlessly and feverishly exposes the political, social and sexual subversions of Victorian-era gender-benders: sapphists, libertines and passing women. Set in 1890s London against a backdrop of music halls and socialist demonstrations, Waters's debut is an engrossing story of a "tommish" woman battered and buoyed by the mores of the times." Topic fur July 26th: "Away" by Amy Bloom Amy Bloom’s fifth novel features a 22-year-old Jewish immigrant in New York City in 1924. She gets a seamstress job at the Goldfadn Yiddish Theatre, where she becomes the mistress of both a handsome actor and his very connected father, Reuben. She leaves NYC in search of her young daughter traveling to Seattle and across the Alaskan wilderness. Her travels encompass prison, prostitution, and poetry. Topic for August 30th: "Stone Butch Blues" by Leslie Feinberg. "This compelling first novel follows the sexual travails of lesbian Jess Goldberg. At its start she is a girl who feels confused by strict ideas about gender and who wonders if she might be a "he-she" since people often ask whether she is a boy or a girl. Constantly searching, she quickly moves from trying on her father's suits to visiting bars and transforming herself into a full-blown 'butch'" Topic For September 27th: "Birds in Fall" by Brad Kessler. "One fall night, an innkeeper on a remote island in Nova Scotia watches an airplane plummet to the sea. As the search for survivors envelops the island, the mourning families gather at the inn, waiting for news of those they have lost. Here among strangers, they form an unusual community, struggling for comfort and consolation." Everyone Welcome! |
